Yahoo! Takes Flak For Yoohhoo Suit

Net giant Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO) incurred the wrath of Thai Internet users by filing a lawsuit against similarly named Thai site Yoohhoo, Thai newspaper The Nation reported Sunday.

The Thai site, which features scant content and numerous "under construction" sections, generated user support in Thai message boards. Yahoo! may be attempting to clear the way for its own Thai portal, yahoo.com.th, due to be launched later this year, the report said.

The lawsuit, filed in April, has not received any further action since the Thai Webmasters Association that "Yoohhoo" is simply a human sound, like "Yahoo," and that otherwise the site bears no resemblance to the portal of the Santa Clara, California-based company, the newspaper reported.

According to sources, Chinese portal Sohu.com changed its name in late 1998 from Sohoo.com over concerns of potential legal action from Yahoo!. Sohu.com chief executive officer has always maintained that the company's name, which means "search fox" in English, was derived independent of any coincidental resemblance to the pioneering search engine. Neither Sohu.com nor Sohoo.com reflect the correct romanization of the "search fox" characters, which would be rendered as "Souhu.com."
